HND was formed in 1986, but has its origins much earlier. The 'N' in HND derives from William Nuttall Ltd who had been distributing goods in the North Manchester area since the 1890s.

The HND name was amended in December 2006 to "R. Swain & Sons Ltd T/A: HND"
